Mesntrual discharge can very in color because most of it isn't actually blood. There's only about two tablespoons of blood (give or take) per your whole period, and what this means is during that time your mesntrual fluids can look anywhere from brighter red (when it's more blood) to a dark brown (when it's "old" blood or much less blood).

During your period, you body is shedding the uterine lining, what would have been used as nutrient for a fetus if you had become pregnant. This uterine lining is what makes most of the mesntrual discharge (which is also why the conssistancy of one's period can be anywhere from very runny/liquidy, to like clots or globs

This has happened to me a few times - it is a day or two where it is a dark bloody red colour and then gets normal again, where I bleed for about 6 days. However, I still think you should go see your doctor... if you have had sex then you may have had a miscarriage and you need to get rid of the residue that is still left inside.

Let me know how you go after you have seen a doctor.
