What does it mean exactly to be "dating" someone, semantically speaking?

"Dating" that is, as compared to "going on a date" or "seeing someone" or just "good friends" or perhaps "friends with benefits"? What exactly is the specific criteria needed to say, with confidence, that you are "dating" someone?

Additional question -- can one person be "dating" another without the feeling being mutual? I mean, let's say I think I'm "dating" this woman but she doesn't think she's "dating" me? Are we then not really dating?

Yes, I know there are many points of view -- I'm just looking for a general, overall feeling about the meaning of this very loaded expression.

"Dating" like you said is too overloaded. It could mean they're just going on dates, or it could mean they're boyfriend and girlfriends. But it does not mean friends with benefits, booty calls, or bed buddies. Those are supposed to be sex only, without romance, where dating implies some sort of romantic activities with or without sex.

One of the most important factor is exclusivity. Are you just seeing each other and no one else? Even then it's still open to interpretation because it could be a light "trial period" of dating to see if things work out.

If you're not sure, then don't use the word "dating". Accidentally appearing "clingy" could drive her away. Introduce her as your friend... that pretty much leaves the question open. The more mature male friends will leave her alone just in case. Where if you introduce her as say your co-worker (for example, if you work with her), than that pretty much means open season on her.

Best way, ask her, see what she's comfortable with.
