What are the Odds of a Non-Subway Series?

The Yankees' probable opponents in the postseason would be:

Oakland Athletics (6-3 vs. NYY; 6 home games, all before July)

Detroit Tigers (2-5 vs. NYY; 4 home games)

Minnesota Twins (3-3 vs. NYY)

The Mets' probable opponents in the postseason would be:

St. Louis Cardinals (2-4 vs. NYM)

Los Angeles Dodgers (3-4 vs. NYM; 3 home games)

San Diego Padres (2-5 vs. NYM; 3 home games)

Let's face it, neither team is truly threatened by the playoff picture, but, as they say, anything can happen in October.

All fan bias aside, do the odds favor another Subway Series this year?

Update:

So much for "all fan bias aside."

The Twins had potential to go far in the postseason until liriano got hurt. They still have the to be Cy Young winner Santana on their team though, and the closer Nathan. Detroit is loosing it, they dont have enough experience to go to far into the playoffs. And who ever wins the AL West sucks and they will lose in the first round.

As for the NL, the mets are the only team worthy of being in the World Series, as everyone else sucks. The Mets also just got Pedro Martinez back, and that always helps.

So yes, the odds do favor a subway series.

the odds are pretty good, seeing as the New York Yankees are too good for anyones own good now that Hideki Godzilla Matsui, Gary Sheffield, and Mariano Rivera have returned from their injuries. I cant possibly see the yankees dropping out of the postseason this time. They will be the AL representative in the World Series. In the NL the Mets are a helluva team, you must admit. best record in baseball if im not mistaken. If they make it to the world series, you get your subway series, however, being an expert analyst myself and a really good one at that, i predicted in the preseason that the world series would be the yankees vs dodgers hence you wont see a subway series. as it stands, i would say the dodgers are the toughest team in the mets way. once the dodgers gets by the superior mets, which has happened already in postseason history, ill be looking like the genius i am.

Well, given that a Subway series would require two specific teams in the Series, I would say the odds against it are pretty good. I give the Mets a 50% chance of winning the NL, and the Yankees a 33% chance of winning the AL. That makes the chance of seeing a subway series 17%.

Even if you give the Yankees a 50% chance of winning the AL, that only boosts the odds of a subway series to 25%.

Althoug people are expecting another subway series, it's not gunna happen. Although the Mets are a great team with great potential, I just don't think they have the experience that they need to head into the WS. Plus, they would probably be playing St. Louis in the NLCS. The Cards might not have the best record against the Mets, but they have a man named Albert Pujols. I say WS:

    Yankees vs. Cards
