When Virginia seceded in 1861, a new state was created: Kanawha. Why was it changed its name to W. Virginia ?

Update:

My question is that: Why not keep the original name of the new state as Kanawha when it was created, but changed to West Virginia as we now know?

Update 2:

But Jason D, if you notice, most US states comes with a Native American name, i.e. Alabama, Connecticut, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Massachussetts, etc...

Update 3:

Dear fightingpit,

You're wrong. Saigon is still alive & strong. Ask anyone who has gone back to Saigon, they'll tell you. Even on the tag of your luggage to issued by the airlines, it still states "SGN". In fact, it still preferrable by all Vietnamese inside & outside Vietnam.

Remember the historical original name St. Petersburg & Volgograd of Russia: they never faded away in the minds of the Russians by the names of Lelingrad & Stalingrad, which were politically inflicted upon by the Soviet Commies for decades.

Maybe Kanawha sounded too Native American and the whites wanted a nice white name for the state.

    I could be dead wrong.
