When Virginia seceded in 1861, a new state was created: Kanawha. Why was it changed its name to W. Virginia ?
My question is that : Why not keep the name Kanawha, but changed to West Virginia ?
Sitboy23,
I like it better, too.
After all, most US states have a Native American name, i.e. Kansas, Iowa, Idaho, Minnesota, Dakota, Oklahoma, Utah, etc...
MH,
Thanks for the helpful source.

During the First Constitutional Convention, on December 3, 1861, Harmon Sinsel, of Taylor County, made a motion to strike the word Kanawha from the State Constitution. The discussion regarding the motion revealed concerns of possible confusion between the State of Kanawha and the County of Kanawha within the same State. Additionally, there was an expressed desire among the Convention members to reflect their Virginian heritage. After much debate, the motion passed 30-14 and a new name was sought.

Kanawha was named after the Kanawha River. After they joined the union, and become a sepreate state, some people thought that the name Kanawha would confuse people with Kanawha Country. So, they adopted the name West Virgina. I like the name Kanawha better.

Because the eastern, northern and southern parts stayed as Virginia.

No one liked the name and still do not. Also, we would have to change all our geography and political books, which I think that was pretty insightful of those folks at the time.
