Determine which is the name of your Win98 folder (windows, or winnt) and simply delete the folder while in and from XP.

You DON'T need to wipe the whole partition or format it.

When you install Window XP the operating system back up your window 98 system files, you can remove it by opening window explorer and look for the folder or a program marked window 98 and delete it or send it to recycle bins.

It is possible that when you (or someone else) may have upgraded to Windows XP from Windows 98. If that is the case you cannot safely remove windows 98 as it will unintall Windows XP as well. The best thing to do would be to backup your stuff and reinstall with Windows XP.
