Why does this happen to my eyesight?
If I sit outdoors and read a book (which I like to do a lot--except for this problem) my vision gradually become "starry". I can describe it as being like having Vaseline rubbed over my eyeballs and trying to look through it. It takes quite a while for my eyesight to return to normal. Does anyone know the physical reason this happens? Does it happen to anyone else out there?

I tend to have this problem too and this is what the eye doctor told me, it has to do with the lens in your eye. The lens has to change shape in order for you to see that object far away. It's takes time for the lens of your eye to adjust. So he told me when I'm reading to look up often at something far away and it works. Don't just sit and stare at that book for hours at a time, give your eyes a rest by looking away.

Are you wearing sunglasses when you sit outside and read? If not, your eyes are probably having a hard time adjusting to the intense glare of the sun off the white pages of the book and you are further straining them by probably squinting and forcing them to focus on the print. Try wearing polarized sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays (which you should always wear outside anyway to protect your eyes from the damaging rays of the sun!). If it persists, you should see an eye doctor. Your eyes are not something you want to mess around with!
Good luck!

The reflection of the suns rays into your eyes from the white pages you are reading can cause this effect. It can be damaging to the eyes in the long run. If you are reading outside in bright sunshine, wear sunglasses or use an umbrella for some shade to protect your retinas.

It's possible that it happens from the sun reflecting off the white pages of the book. It can be pretty blinding and could posibly do weird stuff to your eye site like that.

Vision does have a tendency to change. Did your ophthalmologist say you are going to need glasses? Relax, and if you do, it's not a big deal. Oh, and nobody has a "daily eye exam," they have yearly or biannually.

That happens to me a lot. It happens because when your eyes are focused on one thing for too long, you don't blink as much, which makes them get all foggy.
