Apple Pie by Grandma Ople ***** 813 Ratings

"This was my grandmother's apple pie recipe. I have never seen another one quite like it. It will always be my favorite and has won me several first place prizes in local competitions. I hope it becomes one of your favorites as well!"

    INGREDIENTS:

1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch double crust pie

    1/2 cup unsalted butter

    3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

    1/4 cup water

    1/2 cup white sugar

    1/2 cup packed brown sugar

8 Granny Smith apples - peeled, cored and sliced

    DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Melt the butter in a saucepan. Stir in flour to form a paste. Add water, white sugar and brown sugar, and bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and let simmer.

Place the bottom crust in your pan. Fill with apples, mounded slightly. Cover with a lattice work of crust. Gently pour the sugar and butter liquid over the crust. Pour slowly so that it does not run off.

Bake 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft.

Best if you cook peeled and sliced apples first with a tiny bit of water, sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of black pepper. add some flour or cornstarch after the apples are cooked to thicken.

Use your favorite crust recipe, fill the pie shell full, don't be skimpy since the apples are already cooked. I use the folded pie pastry (Pilsbury) and that is better than my own. haha

    Crunch Top Apple Pie

    Difficulty: Easy

    Prep Time: 15 minutes

    Cook Time: 55 minutes

    Dough and Filling:

Dough for a double crust 9-inch pie (homemade, frozen, or refrigerated)

    3/4 cup sugar

    1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

    Dash salt

3 1/2 cups peeled, chopped cooking apples

    1 (16-ounce) jar applesauce

    1 tablespoon lemon juice

2 tablespoons butter, chopped into small pieces

    Crunch Topping:

    3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

    1 tablespoon sugar

    Dash salt

1 tablespoon butter, at room temperature

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.

Line a 9-inch pie pan with half of dough. Combine sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl. Stir in apples, applesauce, and lemon juice. Spoon apple mixture into pie pan and dot with butter. Cut remaining crust into strips; arrange in a lattice design over top of pie. For crunch topping, combine flour, sugar, and salt in a bowl. Using a fork, cut in butter until mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle over top of crust. Bake for 10 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 degrees F and continue to bake for about 45 minutes, or until crust and topping are golden brown.

I use 6 cups of apples, 3/4 c sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, 2 tbsp flour and a sprinkle of nutmeg. Since apples are farily juicy you don't even need to mix the ingredients up as long as you try to sprinkle things evenly

You can either make pastry or buy premade ones from the supermarket.

Here is the website that gives you full detail step by step of how to bake an apple pie. However, I like to cook the filling till soft (boil the apple slices + lemon juice + cinnimon stick + raisin in a pot for 30 minutes) instead of just put raw apple slices in it.

you can take a store-bought cookie crust and add a can of apple pie filling if you want a quick reciepe, or you could check out tasteofhome.com they have a ton of recipes for everything you could imagine and they have to be baked and tested before they get to be listed so you know they have to be good!
