Where did the Intelligence Cycle Originate?
For all those military historians out there - I am trying to find the true origins of the Int cycle. The first time it was formalised into the 4/5 diff stages (depending on which one you work with).
I am writing a paper, so references would be very much appreciated.
Thanx Natsagusa - I'm aware of the OODA loop, but I was under the impression that the int cycle was older and was in use by WWII (don't quote me on that), but I will definitely do the research you suggested.

For a moment I thought you were talking about the OODA cycle (Observe, Orient, Decide and Act). The origins of that came after the Second World War. Various studies on combat were commissioned during the immediate postwar years; one of them was on "what made a fighter ace". Upon interviewing and examining the records of countless Army Air Corps, Navy, and Marine Corps fliers, it was found that 1 out of 20 in every organization accounted for 50% of all the kills. It was determined that their success was based in large measure due to their success in implementing a faster OODA loop than their opponents.
If I were you, I'd look at sources like Canada's "Intelligence Field Manual" and pretty much everything from 1945 onwards, as that's when most of the intelligence doctrine was actually codified. I can help you look, if you feel like emailing me on your progress. This isn't my field, but it's something of interest.
Good luck.
