Who knows about Jazz?

I like jazz, but I haven't realy been exposed to it. I like fast jazz, but I have no idea what it is even called, but I want to find some good players and bands. Have you ever heard Englishman In New York by The Police, at around 2:05, they play a jazzy type of bridge, that is exactly what I am talking about, fast piano, fast non repeating bass lines, as well as sax. If you know any names, i would definitely appreciate the help.. I do listen to Coltrane, Montgomery, Wes, and other.. but they aren't what i am looking for. I am not into the smooth jazz, nor R&B type of jazz, nor anything that is mostly to have sex too... just some real jazz... fast real jazz... thank you if you help... anything would be great.

Try checking out Charlie Hunter. He's real good and plays a custom made 8 string guitar. Top 3 strings are bass strings so he's his own bass player. Tours a lot too.

I don't know anything about fast jazz music. I listened to the Englishman In New York like 5 times in a row like 10 minutes ago. Sorry I can't help you but I will always love you!

I agree with some of the answers already. The music of Charlie Parker and Dizzy is called be bop. It's probably exactly what your looking for. If you can get a CD of their music from Dec. 17, 1947, then you'll have a great set of their music. Anything between 1945-1947 is good stuff from them.

The Coltrane that you heard is probably his stuff from his Impulse record label. It's much different from his only Blue Note record called Blue Train. There's a lot of fast and busy playing on that. Try that album before you dismiss Coltrane.

    Try these...

Stan Getz and JJ Johnson and the Opera House.

    Sonny Clark- Cool Struttin'.

Miles Davis-Milestones(Miles played with Parker and Dizzy, and it shows).

I hope I could help get you started. If I can be of more assistance, you can contact me.

There's lots of different stuff - Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck. Stuff that came out on Blue Note in the 50s and 60s. You might like the Lounge Lizards.
