Tricky, since horsepower has practically nothing to do with cc's!

The same size motor can have different horsepower outputs depending on compression, intake and exhust design.

I'd do this: find out how many cc's one of the older 5 horse, 10 horse, etc. motor has, and use this as a guide.

To convert from cc's to cubic inches either multiply or divide by 16.4 depending on which way you are converting.

I would think the horsepower would still be available as one of the motor specifications.

From what I've seen, American made small engines that are newly rated in cc's will also list the horsepower rating, if not in the ad info, it will be on the engine information plate. Formulas that I've found, although usually stated to be "rough" due to so many variables, show that the type of small normally aspirated engines usually found on lawn mowers and such convert cc's to hp by 22 to 25 cc's per 1 hp. Cars and motorcycles with normally aspirated engines are different and vary between about 15 to 17 cc's per 1 hp. I was looking for a way to find the hp of a 420cc Powermore (China made for MTD) and I found the engine manufacturer lists it as 420 cc's and 7.6 kilowatts @3600rpm (+- 100). Watts can easily be converted directly to horsepower so 7600 watts divided by 745.7 watts/hp equals 10.19 hp and I think that would be the most accurate conversion.

I need to know how to convert cc's to horse power for lawn mower engines. Briggs is changing how they rate their motors, not by hp but by cc ratings. Customers will want to know what hp the motor is.
