Accountancy is a very difficult profession to get into. The attraction of a stable job, with reasonable pay appeals to lots of people, despite the usual jokes about accountancy and accountants being boring.
You are taking the correct course of action by sitting your AAT, and you should push ahead to get your AAT level 4. In the mean time you need to continue to apply for accountancy positions. Make sure that you are aiming at the correct level, as with most jobs you need to start at the bottom and work your way up. You should be looking for purchase ledger clerks or sales ledger clerks positions to get your foot in the door.
Do not forget about temporary assignments, and also consider moving out of the local area if necessary.
Good luck.

Here is the thing. First thing companies look at is the motivation. Why accontancy? prove ur interest to them, u should know what they do and what the role entails.
If ur grades are good then it would be a proof that ur good. If not, i suggest for a few months do some work experience i.e. work for free for some firm. I know the this initial investment of time could be cruel but it's worth it. Then u will be offering firms the guy who already know the day to day work i.e. the firms doens't have to spend time in trainign the guy. There has been success stories after work experience.
