Suger Free Can Kill Your Pet?

Keep those sugarless treats out of Fido's reach. Veterinarians warned on Friday that a commonly used sweetener might cause liver failure in dogs, and perhaps even kill them.

Their report in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association appears to strengthen the suspected link between the sugar substitute xylitol, thought to make dogs sick, and possible liver failure.

Xylitol, a naturally occurring product, is found in many sugar-free chewing gums, candies, baked goods and toothpastes.

Each dog became ill, and five died or had to be put down because of liver failure, possibly from ingesting xylitol.

Even More reason to give your pet just pet food...

Occasionally we feed our dog human food but only a taste and only in his bowl and never from the table and NEVER sugar free or chocolate or onions. We give him an occasional taste of meat (never gravy), veggies and fruits. He LOVES popcorn. We eat light butter and the vet said that is fine. The only time he gest more than he should is when the granddaughters are around and he follows them relentlessly which they love. He gets an occasional cookie or pretzel on those occasions. This past summer our year old grannddaughter, Lexie, purposely dropped her ear of corn to him and he thought it was wonderful. We didn't notice it at first. What a mess he was!

Yes I do and have for over 30 years, but I am selective. They are allowed scrambled eggs and boiled noodles or spaghetti noodles, white rice and cooked leftover chicken.

My cat also kills song birds and eats them whenever he's tired of the pet food... those are going extinct which sucks...

I didn't know about that..that is terrible. thanks for informing.

i do give my dog little pieces of buttered bread just to train him and very very little bacon bits for training purpose as well. i think they are better than some of the coloured dog treats in store as you really do not know if they are good enough for your dog if they are full of colours.
