Which software can I use to quickly edit video files?
I am looking for a program (preferably a free one) that allows basic cutting of video files, nothing more. I don't need to be able to burn the files, convert them, add effects etc. I just need to be able to cut parts out of the video.

VIRTUAL DUB!
ABOUT SOFTWARE:
VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility for 32-bit Windows platforms (95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP), licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images.

John Waddy is correct. I have an iMac OSX 10.4.8 because of
security and my hobby is photography. I have the CD mentioned
by him and, although I am not interested in Movies and Final Cut,
my daughter has a degree in TV and all it‘s techniques and when
here I install the iMovie application for her to do her work. Her
University have several 10.5 dual core Intel Macs and I watch
her working. My 10.4.8 has all the goodies but does not burn
so I have a USB plug-in with super drive and dual core that does
the job. The CD referred to by John has iPhoto, iWeb, Xcode
with file size of +/-1.5gb so I only install iMovie when she is here.
When she goes away I discard iMovie to bin, and keep iDVD
which is part of iPhoto. Her teachers say that iMac is by far the
best. because it is a Pro Computer with design purposes in mind
and is the easiest to use. You could buy a iMac 10.2.1 used for
a bargain price and up grade, the CDs come in selections so you
do not have to buy the lot at once, and Apple are extremely good
in upgrading all applications frequently. Security upgrades come
in all the time, so you do not have worry about invaders. Frankly,
I do not know much about editing movies, I only know what I hear
from the Pros. Think about it, a visit to a Mac dealer will cost you
nothing and it will be an eye-opener, and prices have gone down
recently. Cheers, Iain. P.S I am not an Apple salesman!

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updat... and get Windows Movie Maker 2.1 if you have Windows XP. This is pretty much breast milk as far as flexibilty and control goes.
If you want some real meat, go to http://www.adobe.com/downloads/#videoaudio and get a 30-day trial copy of Adobe Premier Elements 2.0. It is very simple to use, and have advanced features for later. It also is capable of burning DVD's and cpnverting video files.
If by chance you are an Apple Macintosh user, use iMovie which should be in the Applications folder of your Hard Drive (HD). Your only option for flexibility is Final Cut Pro Express HD, but that costs $299.

while you're speaking approximately unfastened video modifying application, dwelling house windows movie Maker is in all probability the main suitable. For application which you may pay for, Sony Vegas professional is amazingly stable yet additionally fairly costly. i in my opinion use Corel VideoStudio professional X4. You do could pay some funds for it, notwithstanding it extremely is lots greater advantageous than dwelling house windows movie Maker and is low-priced than Vegas professional.
