Ear infection gone wrong?

My 19-month-old son has an ear infection. When his doctor looked into one of his ears, he also noticed that there was a considerable wax build-up in there as well.

I've also been concerned lately that he doesn't hear me very well, which I mentionned to the doctor. Because of all these factors, my son is being referred to an ear, throat and nose specialist. The waiting time is approximately 3 weeks and I don't want to wait that long. Should I take him to the hospital right away where I know there is a specialist at hand, or as the family doctor suggested, should I wait until my son is done is antibiotics in 2 weeks and reassess as this time.

Any thoughts?

you can call the specialist your self and let them know you were referred and you have an appointment but you think it is getting worse and ask them if they can get you in sooner. I do it for my dad and if they have a cancellation then they call to see it we can come them. I know they will try to work with you even more so that you have a 19 month old. Good luck to you and hope you baby gets well.

Has he had the infection for long? Has it been recurring?

I'd wait the 3 weeks to see the specialist. He's already on antibiotics and until they're gone, you won't know whether it's just the infection causing the diminished hearing or if there's an underlying cause. The hospital will probably tell you the same thing, treat the obvious and when that's cleared, see if there's still a problem.

By all means, though, set an appointment as soon as possible so the wait doesn't get any longer.

Poor baby....I don't really know about the infection part of your problem (keep him on any meds and wait for your appt for sure, though...and if it gets so bad you can't wait -instincts will kick in-take him to the ER.) My little girl had severe wax build up, and her doctor told me about an over the counter med: Debrox. It's VERY safe, and works VERY well!!! It's so easy to use, but the baby may not like you putting drops in his ears- I'd hate it even at my age....It's in a green and yellow box and I got mine at an Albertson's but I'm wal-mart etc would carry it, too. I don't think it would interfere with his meds, but call your doc and ask if it'd be okay. It may not, since he has a severe infection...but anythings worth a try when you're desperate!! GOOD LUCK
