Writing a TV, movie script? Any good resources (books, websites, etc) on how to write a script, pilot?

I would like to start writing a script for a potential TV series - any good resources on how to get started, how to compose a tight episode and develop characters, etc? Anything online or good books would be great - thanks!

I'm doing a module in this at the moment. I have been told that there is a good book in the "Teach Yourself" series either named as Scriptwriting or screenwriting. You might also find James Ryan's "Screenwriting from the heart: the technique of the character-driven screenplay". Syd Field is a leader in this area and has written many books on the topic.

See if there is an evening class in your area. There are scriptwriting books in the bookshops, Scriptwriting for dummies, or Story by Robert Mckee, or BBC's Get Writing page.

Television set is produced to the lowest common denominator - i.e., the common IQ of the general public, whereas a publication is written to the highest common denominator
