there are two types: while Tai Chi (one of the oldest of the Chinese disciplines) does have some rythmic movements, however it is not as fast paced as Capoeira.

Capoeira is a brazilian Martial Art, which is closely related to two other relatively lost dance fighting disciplines Batuque and Maculele or known by another name baile del maní

it was developed during the slave trade during the colonial period as the slaves were not allowed to learn how to defend themselves from the traders. after slavery was abolished, most former slaves moved into areas where there was little work to be found and often wound up joining gangs and still practiced Capoeira which bore the stigma of being associated with criminal activity (outlawed in 1892), often because if someone was charged with the crime of practicing it, the punishment was having the Achilles tendon cut (from which is difficult if not impossible to repair) so the individual could no longer walk.

so by mixing the movements with the musical rythms of song it appeared to look as though they were dancing. there were also special rythms hidden within the songs (cavalaria) to warn practitioners when the authorities were approaching the Rodas or fight circle.

Capoeira emphasizes strong kicking and quick striking techniques and almost unpredictable and in some circles of Martial Arts, unorthodox movements due to it's rythmic nature.

a practitioner in this discipline usually is in very good shape as it requires a lot of upper body strength, excellent balance and stamina to maintain themselves.

Capoeira, a Brazilian/African art, is said to have been disguised as a form of dance since it was created by slaves. The ginga (sp?), the basic movement of Capoeira, actually looks very dance-like and a lot of the other moves have a kind of "breakdance quality" to them.

Here's a clip of the latest Tony Jaa movie where he fights Capoeira artist Lateef Crowder (starts out wearing a hoodie jacket). It's a great example of the art's dance-like quality...

It's not Chai chi. It is Capoeira. (cap-oh-way-a). A brazilian art that developed amongst slaves who were prohibited from learning self defense. The dance appearance was used to disguise the true function from the slave owners.

Could be Aikido aswell. I've seen them do their stuff. They look like bad dancers, flinging their partners everywhere, but great martial artists.
