Ignore the answers above which refer to a PUK code - this is a Personal Unlock Key that you get if you lock your sim card by entering in the wrong Pin number 3 times.
What you need is a PAC code (Port Authorisation Code). This allows you to port your number over to any UK network. I know Orange don't charge for this but can't comment about O2. All you would need to do is advise them you are giving them 30 days notice and you would like the PAC code. This is normally sent out by letter within 3 working days. When you join your new network they will issue you with a temporary number. You give them the PAC code you got and within 7 days, your number is transferred to them.

any network will allow you to "port a number" (technical term but basically they buy number from O2 and give to you) there may be a charge for this service though
I'm with 3 and have been for years and will be honest when first got my contract they were crap as just setting up but now I think they one of best networks about and cheapest

Orange allowed me to, as I've recently done it. To be honest, I regret moving though, because O2 weren't really as bad as I thought...so the grass is greener often isn't the case! My last 4 bills with Orange have been just under £300, whereas they never went over £150 with O2, and I thought that was expensive...hence the decision to move!
Also, Orange sales people told me the call centre was in the UK...but it's not!!!! I can *never* get through, and when I do, I can't understand them, and then they end up cutting me off...so I never get my problem resolved.
If I had my time over, I'd have stayed with O2! Better the devil you know in this case methinks.

All the networks allow you to keep your old number, but some may charge you for doing so. I went from 02 to Orange and I wasnt too fussed about keeping my old number so I just texted everyone my new one!

You can transfer by getting a PUK code from O2. However, id recommed you stay with O2 as they have the best service i have found.
