I live quite close to Canterbury who had a speedway track, and the team was The Crusaders. Johnny Hoskins who brought speedawy from Australia to Britain was also closely allied with Canterbury.

This was in the mid 70s, and the time of the 'New National League' which was the second divison.

I can remember Rye House Rockets, Newcastle Diamonds, Mildenhall Fen Tigers, Eastbourne Eagles, but there were numerous others.

Reg Luckhurst lived near Canterbury too, and he became an agent for Weslake 4-valve engines, and also rode for the team on a few occasions, this being quite a while after his glory days with Wimbledon Dons.

You got me thinking about this now. I used to go every week during the season, and loved the smell of the 'dope' and the shale in my hair. God!! I had hair then too.....

Love speedway, got methanol running through my vanes! grew up as a Middlesbrough fan so its been so great to have Redcar open this year, had been travelling to Workington! as your a Wimbledon fan you'll be glad to know Danny Gifford has had a fantastic year and i think should get Redcars rider of the year, but i suspect Havey will be given it!

The Sky coverage is fantastic, the gps and Elite league, looking forward to the Elite final tonight! i just wish they would extend the coverage to Premier league as the racing is usually a bit more exiting, its just some of the stadium's aren't up to scratch!

Do you ever go to Rye House? Stu Robson is a good mate of mine and seems to love riding there, it is a nice track!, never made it to Plough lane though, my mum tells me she used to go on the bus years ago with Boro, back when Bruce Forrester, Rusty Hodgeson etc were in the team!

I used to watch it in the late 70s when it was on World of Sport. The best rider at theat time I think was Ivan Magher(?) who was I think from New Zealand
