Where did the extra dollar go?

3 Travelling salesmen, far from home, decide to get a room at a local hotel and split the costs. They ask the clerk "how much for a room?" The clerk tells them $30. They each pull out $10 and give it to the clerk. After a while, the clerk realizes that weekend rates apply, and the cost of the room is only $25. He pulls 5 $1 bills out of the till and heads off to their room. As he's walking, he remembers that there's 3 of them, and 5 won't break evenly between 3 salesmen. So the clerk pockets $2, and gives them each $1 back.

So, now each of the salesmen have paid (net) $9 for the room. [Originally paid $10, got one back from clerk]

9x3=27

Clerk pocketed $2.

27+2=29?

    Its with the Clerk

    the payment was $30

    he took 5 $1 bills

    so

    $30 - $5

so the payment total now is $25

money the clerk have is $5

he gave them each $1 and pocketed $2

so the total is still $30

    $25 payment

    $2 clerk

    $3 each of the lodger

    Where Is The Extra Dollar

  • 1 decade ago

    The room was $30

    $30 - $5 = $25

    $25 + $3 = $28

    $28 + $2 = $30

    The money it's all there

9*3=27. We agree on that one.

27-2= 25! Instead of adding the £2, you're supposed to substract it because the clerck POCKETS the money.

I'm glad I don't have to stay at that place.

If the clerk keeps $2, what will he want next?

Maybe, your luggage when you leave the room.

I posted this very question under "mathmatics" myself exactly one week ago.

They were 3 friends, not salesmen. AND women at that! It started: "Figure this one out brains!"

    No Fair.

If you think about it logically, all the money is there. No missing dollar!

Source(s): This was on a math quiz I took last year and it had me stumped! I finally got the right answer and couldn't believe I didn't figure it out sooner!
