Does my auto liability insurance cover me while driving a rental car?

I am going on vacation in Florida and am renting a car. I have auto collision coverage through my credit card company but want to know if my regular liability insurance covers me while driving a rental too or do I need special insurance?

You need to check that with your auto insurance company. Different states have different regulations. In NYS, you are covered anywhere because we have "no fault" but I have relatives in NC that found out the hard way when they first moved there. Best to call your company for accurate information. Be aware of credit card coverage also because they too have inserted "legal" language that can come back to haunt you if a claim is filed. Not all cards are the same!!!

That is a great question. I am in the same boat. I rent a car a few times a year and don't have insurance either. The $10 a day stuff from Enterprise the other guy was talking about is only bare bones insurance and does not cover much. Most rental co.s charge $30 bucks a day for full coverage. That works out to 11K a year for insurance!! That is outrageous. They must be making huge profits on this. I know when I use my credit card, that some insurance (collision, I think) is provided. But it is not nearly enough coverage. I would like to hear some property and casualty professionals chime in on this question. Anybody know a company who offers reasonable car insurance rates to non-vehicle owners? Alton.......You don't seem to understand. Thisi s about people who do not own cars. You can not get a quote comparison on a car that does not exist.

When you rent a car they'll ask if you are insured, in either case they are insured themselves, they wouldn't let you drive out a car without making sure you are covered, if they do they are liable as much as you are.

No, you don't need extra insurance. The coverage on your vehicle extends to the rental. However, all states differ. There are some that say the rental car's liability insurance is primary and that yours is secondary. There are often disagreements between insurance companies, whose contracts put them excess over the rental company, and the rental company, who tries to put your insurance first. What matters is what the statutes say about whether rentals have to have insurance on them and how the law sees it. Either way, if you have your own insurance, and there's insurance on the rental, it will get sorted out.

I'm a licensed insurance agent in over 40 states. I can tell you that your coverage will follow you to a rental car. This answer with "rental coverage" is BS...that is if you get in a accident and you need a car to rent it will pay for the fee of renting a car. The extra coverage they offer is OK but most of the time you don't need it unless you really want it as it's just another way for the rental company to make money

You need a "rider" on your home car insurance policy, normally its an inexpensive $50 or so annually and your own car's coverage will then extend to the rental.

If you're using some cut-rate no-name company, I would call the agent and make sure. It COULD be a big problem if you're NOT covered.

Contact your insurance company or read your policy. Some do some do not.

Yes, you're covered. They never even ask for verification from me, and I rent cars all the time.
