Tracing Native American heritage can be challenging. For free info, try www.accessgenealogy.com. They have all the rolls online pertaining to Cherokees. RootsWeb has message boards and mailing list that can be very helpful. The NARA website has information, but I found it more difficult to navigate than the Access site. If you know the area that this ancestor lived and life span, I highly suggest posting that to the appropriate RootsWeb message board, you might just get lucky and connect with someone who has information. Good luck.

    Three places.

1)Go to the Library of Congress' website at: loc.gov and post your question on their query site.

2)Try the Smithsonian Institutes website for any information they can give you on how to go about this without a lot of fanfare.

    3) Pay a geneological website to research this information for you.

    Start at

    http://www.cherokee.org/

Be warned - it is graphics-heavy and thus slow, if you have dial-up.
