Focus on the characters of Locke, Jack and Ecko.

Jack is a doctor, a man of science, who doesn't seem to believe in anyone but himself.

Locke is a man that has lost his faith in the island.

Ecko's brother was a priest and Ecko was a bad man, when his brother died he took on his brother's calling and is now posing as a priest.

If you google this I am sure that htere are some good fandom essays out there.

There are many themes running through LOST. In my opinion there is one central theme that seems to affect all the characters, that theme is REDEMPTION. They all have events in their past that have shaped them into the people they are on the island. As they begin to depend on each other for survival they have to confront these issues and make decision to either change or remain the same. In many cases they attempt to hide who they were and let there current acts define them for the others, but as we all know you cannot hide from your true self. As they begin to redeem themselves they take on a new strength that helps them overcome obstacles on the island.
