I’ve read somewhere that „escu” comes from the Pelasgian „-escunus” which means “from the same family/ tribe/ clan/ people with” (The Pelasgs were a people who were kindred with the Thracians. The Thracians had many tribes – about 200 – and among them were those of the Dacians, who are Romanians’ ancestors).
So Ionescu might mean "from the same family with Ion".
