Do Nextel customers have to port to Sprint?

If so, are they left without service for the port time while the number switches from Nextel to Sprint?

Also, how long does that usually take?

No nextel customers do not have to port their number to sprint. However if you are still under contract with nextel and you want to switch to sprint and do not port your number you will be charged a canellation fee from sprint. while sprint has bought nextel the two companies ecessentially remain seperate. If you want sprint the best thing to do is to wait for the new ic500 that should be coming out in the next few months. it will be available for both nextel and sprint. it will use sprints cdma technology for voice calls and nextels iden for walkie talkie. however as long as you ahve been with nextel for 9 mothns you are eligable to switch to sprint without a credit check or a cancelation fee as long as you keep your number, it usually takes about 2-4 hours to port your number over. in the mean time you will be able to send calls from your sprint phone but you will receive calls on your nextel phone until the port completes.

I just had this explained to me, the guy said at T-Mobile, if your going to switch a number to Carrier both phones with you during the 24 hour period, because the phone can switch over w/o you knowing about to the new phone.
