You have not mentioned what purpose you want the server to serve. Linux is popular as web server, mail server, etc etc. So linux could be your server and windows on the user nodes.

It really depends on what you want to do. How many employees? Do they have laptops? Will the laptop be their primary timesheet? Do you want to host a website? Please be more specific, I can't just say "WINDOWS OMFG!!!" or "OMG USE LINUX!!!!111" based on what you said. You need to have a clear idea of exactly what you want. The good thing about linux, if you manage to land a guru as an employee, they can pretty much do anything you want provided they know linux well enough. Linux is free, and super customizable...the person just needs to know how, and to do that, you would need to have a vision beforehand and show the person what sort of direction you want to take. Another thing to take into consideration, despite the unintelligent single word answer above mine, is that windows products cost a LOT OF MONEY! For example, say you want everyone to emal their daily time sheets...how much is a copy of microsoft office with excel? at least $200 per copy. How much is a copy of openoffice.orgs free office suite, which is available on windows, mac, linux/unix platforms? FREE!! Say you buy 15 laptops for the company...if excel/ms office is best case scenario only $200, thats $3000 total youre spending...vs ZERO on the open office suite.

How much is a copy of windows? $99-$250................how much is linux? $0 That's money youre saving on SOFTWARE ALONE, remember hardware is never free... ffalcon at gmail dot com if you have any other questions...

It all depend, say you wanted to run a website, then Linux would be the best choice, since it has Apache, and it must faster then windows.

If you want to create a data server with a proxy, or if you want to make a server for backups, then use windows, as your employees will be using windows, so its the same language, and windows runs proxies easily, and it can be set up to auto backup files from other computers.

Dont you have a network administrator to tell you this stuff?

Also snared dude, Its called warez, and bootleg copies, he can get it for free too, windows isnt prefect, but neither is linux, it all depends on what he wants to do.

The main benefit of Linux is that it's free.. and you aren't charged per processor like you are with Windows. However, you will probably need a skilled Linux guru to get you up and running.

Have you considered Mac OS X Server? It's based on Unix and has tremendous power, the Mac's ease of use, and is virtually impervious to hacking.
