If you are the artist. Go shopping and look around at the various local artists and price the work that closely matches your own style of work. If you go over the amount they are charging you may not get anything sold to the public. If it is someone elses work still living or you have checked with the library it is not a hidden monet or renior the above would still apply for a non-known artist. It is the least troublsome way to set a price on a painitng. If you go to an art dealer they will give you a price that will be less than because they will want to sell it for themselves at a good price. If you got to an apraiser you have to pay for his answer. Do a little foot work enjoy the other art and you will get a great education!

If it's yours, Ask yourself. If it's another Artist ask them, if they are dead ask an Art dealer ( about the artist, the subject matter and the demand for his work). Research the Art and Artist. If you don't you may sell a Million dollar painting for a few dollars.

take it to art galleries and get theis opinion and estimate.

They will take into account your background and any paintings you may have (or haven't) sold in the past.
