I am in the US so the first thing that came to my mind is - are you serious? but maybe you live elsewhere. in the US, many girls have absolutely no respect for themselves anymore, do not value their virginity, engage in sexual activity and then come on yahoo answers with the most ridiculous "am i pregnant" questions. there are so many promiscuous young girls, having babies and getting std's. it is disgusting and a very sad reflection on our sex obsessed society that is filtering down to 12 year olds

Depends on how far back you are comparing to.

If you mean the height of Christianity, then yes.

If you mean pre-Christian times, kind of.... every stage of a woman's life was valued in really ancient times.

If you look at prehistoric times, virgins are least valuable to society because they used resources and bore no successors... so virgins were probably virtually non-existant. Once you became fertile and developed, you became active sexually. If you didn't find a mate, most likely it was because there was something wrong with you so becoming sexually active was something all beings strive for as a sign of being a worthy mate.

I think right now is a time when people are rebelling against the religious strangle-hold, so they are going to act quite animalistic, but given a bit of time, things will reach an equalibrium where we all value the stage of life we are at and society as a whole will respect women more. Hopefully then we will make wiser choices about what we do with our bodies and when, and we'll be sure we are well into the appropriate life stage for our actions.

Virginity like any other matter concerning sex is an individual decision that should be made by the person involved for reasons that seem good to themselves without a lot of outside pressure.

I think most girls value their virginity to the point where they would lose it to someone they were love in with. But waiting for marriage? I don't think most would if society doesn't stress them to be a virgin. I value my virginity and I would like to lose it someone I was in love with . . . if I could feel that way about someone. My desire to be alone was always overpowering and I don't think I could trust someone enough to feel comfortable with giving myself to them. And the STI's and STD's scare me as well.

For a guy, if a girl remains a virgin and he is the one to break the virginity, it is a great honor.

It seems to be old fashioned, but, call me an old fashioned guy.

Marriages seem to last longer if you have good morals.

I for one respect a woman who can resist sex until Married.

It is still very important, in some primitive and most conservative societies, for unmarried girls to remain virgins.

in modern and open societies for a girl to remain virgin at an older age is considered a sort of failure (being very ugly, sociopath, whatever)

i respect anyone who has the courage to be strong enough to wait for someone better like a husband - go on with your bad self!
