why are usb mice so terrible and inaccurate?
I don't think I've used one so far that didn't cause the pointer to wander about like it was drunk, occasionally darting to one or other corner of the screen, and stuttering/failing to respond when there was even the slightest hard disc access or other PCI/USB traffic.
This is a bit of a problem as my tablet laptop doesn't have a PS2 port and i'm trying to set up a workstation using it plus an external monitor, keyboard and mouse (in fact using a prototype to type this). It's awful. Though the thing's optical and i've got it on a good, high contrast pad, it's almost like using a 10-year-old ball-based one that hasn't ever been cleaned.
(Not sure what the internal pad/stick and touchscreen use - they're probably hooked to the ps2 or serial bus? they work perfectly... if they ARE usb, why don't they malfunction the same way?)
Is there any way to fix this nonsense to have it work smoothly and accurately, as it should? Right now i even have trouble hitting the "submit" button on here!
ok extra info and responses to initial answers
1/ This isn't the only USB mouse or computer i've had trouble with - e.g. the dell desktops at my workplace are just as awful. Maybe it's just incompatibiltiies between certain brands of PC/mouse (if your one is fine)?!
2/ Damn... It's really been nasty trying to get back here to add the extra info! It goes all over the place whenever internet transfers are in progress too. Really infuriating. I'm considering going back to just using the laptop as-is (with it's 12" screen, cramped keyboard and all)
3/ I've tried all manner of surfaces ... it's just hopeless. Nothing improves it noticably.
4/ It's wired... i'd lose a wireless one :-)
5/ A PS/2 to USB adaptor would be of no benefit as *it still has to go through usb to reach the computer*. Plus there's the extra conversion stage!
I'll have to look into the possibility of the internal stuff interfering. Thanks for your help so far.
PS "use a magazine cover" - i'm actually using a DVD case right now as i thought it'd present a nice complex image. No dice.

Never had this problem with USB mice. I'd suggest you take a look at your mouse pad or whatever you're using to move your mouse in. It's way more likely that this is the culprit.

I imagine that the problem is the built in mouse of your tablet PC. You have a mouse hooked into the USB which is feeding signals, then you have a mouse like device (touch pad, button, scroll whell) which is also feeding signals. The two are probably in conflict. I know that this is especially possible with tablet PCs due to the touch screen. I would investigate lowering the sensitivity of the mice. This will likely keep it from jumping around. If this does not work, see if you can find away to turn off the mouse functions on the laptop itself while a USB mouse is plugged in. Most laptops have some sort of hotkey to do this, I imagine a tablet should as well. Hope this helps.

If your mouse is wireless, relocate the broadcast antennae closer to the actual mouse, and make sure it has as clear a line of sight as possible....It is low strength, and desk materials can interfere with reception.
If it is wired, do a test with a perfectly flat surface that has a lot of different images on it...like a flat magazine...as a test. If it works great on that, but poorly on your mouse pad, its because it is having a tough time determining direction based on the image on your mouse pad....
A uniform image or pattern may not be the best choice as a surface for an optical mouse. Hence the magazine suggestion as a test.

If the cursor misbehaves when you use a mouse, it's usually a fault of the drivers, not the connection. I never had any problem with USB or PS/2 mice. After you install appropriate drivers, you may have to adjust the sensitivity for your mouse in the control panel, or in the game options.
BTW, wireless mice suck because batteries add extra weight and that screws up the "feel".

i visit signify to purchase a sparkling one, you dont specify what variety of mouse you've, if you're using the old stressed version, the single which has a touch ball interior, you are able to open in from the decrease back and sparkling it , are you using an optical one? laser? it somewhat relies upon. ultimately, if you're using an old version mouse, purchase a laser one , it fee something round $35-$40, there are extra severe priced than that.

try to find a black area where you will use your mouse. it becomes more acurate. USB's usually slow down the system. try to find some kind of adaptor.
