Joseph went and took Mary to his home to be his wife. that was the public declaration that they had become man and wife. No, you are not a bad person. Many people get married by public authorities because they have no religious affiliation or are not comfortable with a church ceremony. Your grandmother grew up in a different time, but nowadays, getting married outside of a religious setting is more common and accepted. If you are happy in your marriage, who cares what anyone else thinks, its your life to live.

What difference does it make if you singed a paper that said so or if some pervert priest so called "blessed" your marriage. Marriage is a commitment. not a paper or a ceremony. No, don't give it another thought. Being married 'in the church' is part of the belief of Catholics and maybe Jews, etc. It doesn't come from the Bible. Just try to be nice to your poor, dear, ol' grandmother who obviously loves you very much, and do your best to keep the faith as well as the peace in the family by not arguing with her. God bless.

This is a very "gray" area. By Biblical standards you are in "sin" because God doesn't recognize marriage unless its coveted by a Priest.
