What kind of items should I have for a pirate costume?

I have a red & white striped shirt, an eye patch, and a big hoop earring (came w/the patch) but what else should I get/wear to go along with a pirate costume?? I hate wearing store bought generic costumes so I always like to put it all together myself... Any suggestions?

You need a pirate sword and a parrot for your shoulder

Let me just say you are awesome for putting this together yourself.

I would say some pants with frayed ends and possibly some sort of boots to wear along with the outfit. Those black biker boots that are popular now might be good. Nothing with laces though, I don't think pirates have time for laces.

Probably also a thick leather belt with a big clunky buckle, but nothing too cowboy. You could get a hat kind of like what Johnny Depp had in Pirates, or a tattered head scarf to wear around your head. Maybe a cool, authentic looking necklace, like something twine-y with like an evil-eye on it or shells or something that pirates might use in some sort of hoodoo to ward off spirits that might be angry and create a storm. I don't know, that might be too witch-y though.

Either way let me know what you decide to get finally cause I LOVE a good pirate costume!

I can picture your image. I "see" pirate crewmember.

But the definitive pirate is the captain, the man in charge, the blood thirstiest, meanest, cussingest man among the rest.

And that means you gotta have the hat. The big, floppy tricorner hat. Not the British Admiral's or Napoleon's hat. It has to be the tricorner.

Easiest way to create one is to find the widest brimmed hat you can get your hands on. Beat it up and get it dirty. Then fold the brim up on three sides; the back and the two sides coming together in the front.

Wear this over a bandana. Stick a feather in it and "Hyarr, hyarrh!" to your heart's utter content.

Big old overcoat would be great, but not entirely necessary. Be sure to sew some stripes on the end of the sleeve to denote rank.

Some kind of Bandana to wear on your head and you should use black make up to "knock out" a tooth!
