How do you keep from eating when you know your not hungry?

I always want to eat. I'm not overweight (yet) but I still feel like I eat too much and I don't like to eat around other people. What can I do to eat less or tell myself that I'm not hungry.

First, you have to figure out if you are actaully "biologically" hungry or just "habit" hungry (stressed, bored, everyone else is eating, etc)

Often times, people who are "dieting" do not eat enough and their body fights for the food it needs. If this is the case, you can't really talk yourself out of being hungry. There is a link at the bottom of the new USRDA guidelines. I would suggest that you take a look at it and, first and foremost, make certain that you are eating enough of the right foods. It will help you figure out whether or not you are ACTUALLY eating too little.

You can ask yourself "Am I really hungry or am I just eating becaue I am bored/being social/stressed etc."

If you determine that you are "habit hungry" , as simple as it might seem, try telling yourself (or anyone who offers you food) "I am not hungry". Do it repeatedly and, if your body, truly is not in need of food (energy) , you won't feel hungry. The brain is an amazing thing

If you are by yourself you can try things like: talking on the phone, going for a walk, painting your nails, washing the dog.. anything that you cannot do while you are eating.

Also, drink a big glass of water - often times thirst is mistaken for hunger

That having been said, the brain is an amazing thing and you CAN control it, it is just a matter of the way you train it

Physiology on the other hand is another thing and you cannot fight your body's "self defense" mechanism. If it is hungry, you need to feed it, the right foods in the right amount. First I would start by figuring out if you are getting what your body needs

Humans are creatures of habit. ...e.g., seeing mates=beer, fishing=beer, etc

That is to say, you have a habit of eating whilst not hungry - what ever the reasons, in your case I have two ideas I think should break your habit!

Firstly, if you must eat when full - eat something extremely health that you dont like at all! This way if you actually start liking said food, its actually better for you in the long run as well.

Secondly, its easier to actually replace a habit, and then break that new habit once you have gotten over your first habit.

...e.g., smokers often replace smokers with pencils, eating could be replaced by bubble gum, or drinking water!

Try to localize the habit and redirect it.

With regard to eating around people, this relates to a bigger problem (i'm guessing). But to diffuse this, try getting yourself relating food with social events - like cooking with friends & family.

Eating lower GI foods will keep you both feeling more full, and also feeling full for longer.

(best check wikipedia for a run down on GI, see link below)

Hope one of these ideas give you at least some food for thought.

    Good luck!

Occupy your mouth some other way. Gum,giant suckers, bodyparts (im not trying to be sick), icecubes, popcycles (the edy real fruit bars are the best) Drink alot of water (it fills you up) If you must snack...healthy foods. Granola bars (the real ones, not the ones covered with suger & with marshmellows & choc,) grapes, bannas, dehiderated apple chips, mini rice cakes ( they actually have good ones now! I recomend the apple & cinn.).

Switch what you keep in ur fridge. If you normally have icecream, buy sherbert or frozen yougert. If you normally eat lunch meat sandwhichs try wraps instead ( totila shell w/ heated frozen popcprn chicken, ranch dressing, lettuce, & a little bit of shreeded cheeze), buy Kraft free dressing instead of the kind w/ bacon in it. Buy oscar myer real bacon bits instead of cooking frozen bacon. Eat a filling meal instead of snacking alot. Buy healthy substitues for what you do eat.

Don't be embarressed of eating in front of people. It'll just make you hungryer.

Eat chinese instead of a cheezeburger when your out. ( the rice fills you up more then the bread, so you'll eat less, & usually its healther.)

Are you eating enough? That might be why your always hungry. Or if you have a high motablizim, that might have something to do with it.

If you're really not hungry, you can try to do something that will take your mind off of eating. Try cleaning, reading, walking, etc. and if you can't do any of those things, just change the foods you eat. When you get that feeling, try eating fruits and veggies or foods that are low in fat and calories. You can also try drinking water when you get that feeling. Water helps gives you the feeling that your full anyway.

I saw a tv show on this condition and if what you are saying is true, you might have an imbalance in your brain, I am not sure but it's an eating disorder , That your brain does not have the chemistry to understand that you have eaten and you never feel full, and you just keep eating, This can lead to severe weight gain and you can't help it, you should get checked if you get worse. The show was Mystery Diagnosis. Good Luck.

Drink a glass of water. Not only should this satisfy you, because most of the time when you think you're hungry you're actually thirsty, but it's good for your body and helps your metabolism. Don't make the water too cold, or else your body will have to work to warm it up before it can use it.

I suggest that you continue eating... doing so on a regular basis in smaller portions (healthy snakcing) is good for you. eating small amounts all day long will help you to not only lose weight but to not feel so hungry. Your metabolism should boost straight up and you wont feel so bad about eating all the time.

    Why Do I Keep Eating

  • 1 decade ago

Drink a glass of water. Sometimes the human brain confuses hunger for thirst.

Try chewing gum or sucking on a piece of hard candy.

It can usually hold you off until it is time to eat.
