House Fire, Disaster, Fire Fighter.?

I heard they said all the time about 1 alarm fire, 2 alarm fire....or 3 alarm fire....what is that mean? how they mearsure the number of alarm fire?

    Each of the alarms has a certain amount of units responding to the incident. In NYC we would have 2 engines(Pumper trucks) 2 Ladders (Ladder Trucks) and a Chief. Should the incident be larger than the first alarm assignment could handle, additional resources would be needed ( additional Engines, Ladders, Rescue Units, and Chiefs). Hence, a second alarm. and so on.

    So really the alarm assignment (1st....2nd...3rd....ect.) is both an indicator of the severity of the incident and how many units are needed to fight the fire.
