Question about applying for credit cards?

If I go to a retail store and apply for a credit card, for instant approval they usually need another one of your credit cards to check it. Can you use a debit card for this purpose if it has a visa logo on it?

Update:

Also, if you can use debit cards, will this improve your chance of getting their credit card?

Don't know much about the instant approval process, but I do know that you should avoid getting a lot of retail store credit cards. The more open accounts you have (over maybe 1-3), the more of a credit risk you will look like and the worse your credit score will be. Best to stick with a couple of credit cards that have general rewards (points, flyer miles, etc.) rather than get a ton of retail credit cards that could wind up pushing your interest rates up.

Are you a student? Apply for a Student MasterCard or Visa with your local college, Bank or Credit Union? Or you can establish a Secured Credit Card first with a Bank such as Wells Fargo or Bank of America among others. You make a deposit say for $300 and you get an official Visa or MasterCard and then your repayment history gets reported to the major credit bureaus and after a few months the Bank drops the security deposit. Be patient once you get a card you will get other solicitations. Do you have a job? Employment history? etc.? These will all help you also in obtaining credit from a Department Store or Gasoline Station credit card. Remember to use credit wisely and establish a budget for your income and expenses. GOOD LUCK! :-)

Debit cards don't help get credit cards, it depends on your actual credit history, ability to repay debt, cash in the bank, and in savings accounts as well as your income. All are factors.

Avoid store credit cards if you can, they have the highest interest rates, shortest grace periods, usually less than 30 days, and they continually try to hook you into using the card for special deals on merchandise you can get elsewhere for much less. Best bet is to get a Visa or Mastercard, but only if you have the ability to keep it paid off each month.

Yes, a Visa check card works like a credit card for that purpose.

Debit card should be OK however, I totally agree with others have already said here, stay away from credit cards. A couple of them should be more than enough.

Why would you want their credit card, and not just get a Visa you can use anywhere?

Apply for a gas card where you always buy gas. That's the best first credit card. You're going to buy gas anyway, right?

Nope, they will usually require a credit card. Debit cards usually have an indication that they are a check card.

It depends on the store...some will use a debit card but most won't. It's not used at all in the decision process.

yes they can use a debit card. the debit card has information they use to verify who you are. that is why they are asking for a card, simply to verify info about who you are.
