The Chase for the Cup was first used in 2004, in which Kurt Busch won the championship. It was implemented because the champion the previous year (2003 - Matt Kenseth) won by such a large margin.

It was introduced in 2004 and Kurt Busch was the first to win a Nextel Cup Championship(chase for the cup) before we had Winston Cup and then Nextel brought more money to the table and nascar now is called the Nascar Nextel Cup many there were very mixed reactions but now i think we have gotten use to it and are actually liking the new Chase as to its more exciting and kind of a toss up to who can win the Championship instead of a runaway winner.
