No. Your current boss may cut you some slack but technically, he could get into trouble for it. You are supposed to have a work authorization card. You are supposed to apply for renewal 90 days before it expires because that is how long in theory it can take them to process your application. If it has been more than 90 days, then you can ask for a temporary immidiate card until they produce the one you applied for. Those are the regulations.
I hope you got a USCIS receipt notice letting you know that your application is being processed. It contains a case number and important info. If you did not get it, then, oh boy, I hope you sent your I-765 application by certified mail, return receipt requested so that you can have proof of it and you should check and see if your check or money order was cashed by them. (Did you keep a receipt?) And if you kept copies of the application you sent with the supporting documents, then everything will be easier. Just go to the www.uscis.gov website and get an infopass. You will need that to get an appointment with them so that they can issue your temporary card. Depending on what is your nearest office, sometime you have to try for days, weeks, and even a cuple of months to get one of these appts. The server will say that they are no appointments availabe at this time. Or you may get lucky the first time. I try at different times of the day and night and different days of the week until you can get it. Hope this helps

If you filed for adjustment of status you can wait in the US until you get your greencard. But until you get a new EAD you cannot work. If you filed only an I-130 or I-140 you cannot wait in the US. Not sure what visa you are working on and on what basis you plan to apply for a greencard. More info needed to comment. How did you get your EAD?
