Indian people, please answer my question...?

On several occasions I've noticed people give some important personal information such as their birthday, spouse's birthday, address, phone number, etc. and then ask to predict whether something good will happen regarding their situation (if they get a job, baby will be born healthy, etc). It's like they expect that, judging from the personal information they provide, people can look into the future and give them an answer.

I noticed that the people who ask these questions seem to be Indian. Is this some sort of superstition? I'm just really curious.

Update:

I'm specifically talking about Indian people who ask these questions on Yahoo Answers.

According to my sister, who works in a business with lots of East Indians, they are VERY into astrology. In fact I have noticed myself when looking up information about Bollywood actors, lots of astrological information about them is given in articles and such. So, I guess it is just a cultural thing that many of them have a strong belief in astrology.

actually chinese people are CRAZY about that stuff, and there is actually a calander called the chinese birth calander and depending on when you concieved your child, determines the sex of it as well...Now my sister has 5 kids,I have 1,my gilrfriend has 4,and everyone I know that has children(almost everyone)I quizzed about when they concieved their child, and if you count it out,it guarantees to be right,or at least with everyone I have talked to.I have not found not one time that it has been wrong! As for the indians, they do not believe in superstition, but maybe your hanging around a bunch of odd ones??
