What is the difference betw apple crisp and apple cobbler?

Is there a difference at all? And what is your best apple cobbler recipe?

You are looking for Episode EA0904, called Cobbled Together, which explains the difference between crisps/crumble, cobblers and "grunts". The crisp is the sugar, oatmeal, spice (and sometimes nut) topping sprinkled over top. Cobbler is a sweetened dough, almost like dumplings, spooned on with space left between dollops. Grunt topping is more like "cornbread" (from what I gathered) and is spooned over top of fruit, completely covering it, then baked to form shell. My mom has always made the "Five Roses" Fruit Crumble... the original cook book came down from my grandmother and Five Roses reprinted it last year.

    Fruit Crumble.

    Fruit of any kind

    1/2 cup butter

    1/2 cup light brown sugar

    3/4 cup Five Roses all-purpose flour

    1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

    1/4 teaspoon cloves

    Cover 8 inch square cake pan with a 1 inch layer of fruit, prepared as you like. Cream butter, add brown sugar gradually, cream until well blended. Add flour and spices, mix to crumb consistancy. ( I have always added extra spice to mine. Try a pinch of nutmeg!) Crumble over fruit and bake in a 350 oven for 40 - 45 minutes. (Or until fruit tests for doneness.) If using canned fruit, drain thoroughly.

    Apple crisp the topping is made with sugar, butter, a little flour and cinnamon it is very sweet and crispy

    Cobbler is a biscuit like mix, not so sweet

    Crisp is where you put that mix of flour, brown sugar, butter and sometimes oats on top. Cobbler I believe is topped with a biscuit like mix. Iv'e never made it, hope people show up with some good recipes for you.

    The Crisp, you crumble up cake mix and sprinkle on top,,, the cobbler, you add milk, flour and sugar together and pour over the cooked apples.

    Cobbler has a sweetened biscuit like topping on it and is usually saucier. A crisp, however, has an oatmeal topping and is often a bit drier.

    Apple cobbler

    5 cups tart apples, peeled, sliced

    3/4 cup sugar

    2 tablespoons flour

    1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

    1/4 teaspoon salt

    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    1/4 cup water

    1 tablespoon butter, softened

    Topping:

    1/2 cup flour, sifted

    1/2 cup sugar

    1/2 teaspoon baking powder

    1/4 teaspoon salt

    2 tablespoons butter, softened

    1 egg, slightly beaten

    PREPARATION:

    In a medium bowl, combine apples, 3/4 cup sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon salt, vanilla and water. Turn into a lightly buttered 9-inch square pan. Dot apples with 1 tablespoon butter.

    Combine all topping ingredients. Beat with wooden spoon until batter is smooth. Drop batter in 9 portions, over the apples, spacing evenly. Batter will spread during baking. Bake 35 to 40 minutes at 375° or until apples are tender and crust is golden brown. Serve warm with cream or ice cream.

    Serves 6 to 8.

    Apple Crisp

    3 pounds tart apples

    2 tablespoons lemon juice

    1/2 cup brown sugar

    1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

    1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

    1/3 cup all-purpose flour

    1/3 cup granulated sugar

    1/3 cup rolled oats

    4 tablespoons cold butter (1/2 stick)

    1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

    PREPARATION:

    Peel, core and chop apples, toss in a bowl with lemon juice to prevent darkening. In a separate bowl, combine brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg; stir into apples. Set aside.

    In another bowl combine flour, sugar and oats. Cut butter into 8 pieces, and cut butter into flour until mixture looks like crumbs. Stir in nuts. Butter a 10 X 10-inch baking dish. Spread apples in bottom of baking dish then sprinkle with flour mixture. Bake at 375° for 30 to 45 minutes, or until apples are tender and topping is lightly browned. Serve warm or at room temperature.
