I do not know what state you are in but if you need help finding a list of kill shelters in your area I would call the no-kill shelters you have and ask them for the kill shelters or pounds. If you explain what you need the information for, I am sure they will give you a complete list. You can also call the non emergency number of your local police. They usually take animals to the kill shelters. Big cities like Chicago have a non emergency number 311 (?) that gives you all sorts of information about services in the city. They can refer you in the right direction. Good luck with your report.

I don't know the name of any, but dog pounds all over England don't usually have a non-destruction policy. The council pays for each dog to stay at the pound for seven days. After this time, if the dog has not been collected by its owner, or rehomed to a new family, the dog is put to sleep. These dog pounds are known to animal lovers as 'death rows'. This is because, a particular day of the week, see's around 21 dogs being put to sleep, as they have no homes to go to. They are in a row of kennels. I don't know if it is of any help but here is a poem a friend wrote about dog pounds, and us (our rescue, GAA) rescuing them.

The floor beneath me is cold and damp,

The bars are my windows in this death camp.

My food bowl is empty, my bed so unclean,

There are stains that show me where others have been.

I hear the howl of my neighbour's cries,

I see the fear deep in its eyes.

The man with the stick comes to hush our barks.

You wait till Monday, he cruelly remarks.

I wait in this place for just seven days,

Hoping someone will notice me, take me away.

Away to a home where I can run and play,

Curl up at your feet at the end of the day.

A family came by today to choose one of us to take away,

I can give you specific answers for our local animal shelter, very high-kill, probably 85% of dogs taken in. They do not take in cats. Because they are funded with county tax money and they do not advertise for adoptions, they do not maintain a web site. E-mail me for location, intake and holding policy, adoption criteria, kill data, etc. if you need it.

If the shelter does not specifically state it is no-kill, then it does kill them.
