Don't tell him anything if he is going to hit you.
File a police report and have him arrested. Nothing says "goodbye" like a nice restraining order.
Or you could learn to fight and then kick his *** to show him what it feels like to be your b-itch. That would take longer than the police option though.
Unless you are both into martial arts and are training by sparring with each other, he should NEVER hit you. If you stay with him then it is a poor reflection on you, He is a lowlife, if you stay with him and let him hit you you are saying to him that that kind of behavior is ok and that makes you one too.

When you tell him I think you should have someone with you! Whether it be a male friend, your brother or father, or the POLICE! Situations like that can get out of hand very quickly! But if you live together, you should definitely get out!! You don't deserve to be hit, and you should be able to go out or talk with your friends without worrying about what's going to happen if you do. Relationships are about love, respect and trust, not hitting, controlling, and being hurtful. Get out as soon as possible!!!

Don't tell him in person for one thing, or tell him to meet you at the police station because you have something to tell him. Your best course of action is wait for him to go to work and pack up and move out. Hell leave him a note.

Drop all contact and stay as far away from him as possible. If he won't come find you tell him over the phone or by email, if he will just leave and break all contact. He'll get the hint eventually.

Um. How about you just pack your stuff and leave while he's at work? You're afraid he's going to hit you? That's reason enough to leave without explanation. Then get a restraining order.

How about you just leave without telling him, and don't accept or return any of his calls?
