NO! there are special paints that you can use to paint and or draw designs of colour, which gives you the satisfaction of knowing that you created the bulb your-self...I did a bulb in half circles,4 in each set, going different ways, the finished bulb looks like a stained glass window against the walls. It is very cool, you purchase these paints at your art store...Have Fun

If it is an incandescent bulb (screw in with a filament) it is not recommended for safety but if it is a fluorescent tube it will work quite well. I have done it with them and found spray paint that is lacquer based and fluorescent colors work best. I have never tried a compact fluorescent but it would probably work too. If you are trying to change the color of the surrounding room with a regular bulb try buying gels to filter the light. They are designed for that use and are available at most party supply shops, I think radio shack still sells them too.

It might not burn but, it will smell for sure especially if it an oil based paint. A water based paint though might work. But to be on the safe side go to a specialty store were you can get colored light bulbs. They are only a couple bucks. That way if you burn down you house you can sue the company that made the colored bulb. If you paint your own bulb and burn down your house you have no one to blame but yourself.

Short answer: No.
Long answer: Noooooooo!
At the very least, the paint would melt and create a serious fire hazard. Colored bulbs are really cheap (literally no more then a non-colored one) ... go buy the real thing.

It will only burn the paint black. I tried it last week. Best bet is to go buy a colored bulb.
