1996 Jeep Cherokee Check Ingine Light?

Check Ingine Light came on while driving down the road, not sure why. Jeep has 104K miles on it and seems to be running good. Checked the fluids, they are ok. Any ideas on what made it come on, or how to get it turned off?

My daughter has a 1997 Cherokee w/107K. Her fuel line got some dirt in it and caused the check engine light to come on. Shortly after it started running sluggish and dying while driving. Drove us nuts until we discovered the dirty line (pump got dislodged on tank, let dirt in).

Autozone told us that we had a bad fuel injector or two at first, we changed out all of them and still had problems. We would had saved some money if we had just let a mechanic check it out first, instead we used it as a last resort.

    Good luck!

104k and the only problem you have is a check engine light? it is probably the oxygen sensor, which is a pain to get to on a newer jeep. If it runs OK, I'd suggest putting a piece of tape over the light and it won't bother you any more

when was the last time you got gas. Is the gas cap on right and tight. It is an emissions code that sets of the computer. Start with the cap and go from there. If the light does not extinguish itself after a few days get it scanned.

might new a need oxygen sensor, spar plugs, timing belt, etc..,

also with most cars from the lat 90's to newer, if the gas cap is not turned 3 clicks, the check engine light will come on.

Replace your gas cap - seriously!

This happened to me also, 2002 Jeep. I took it in and after over $200.00 to hook up to the computer to see what the problem was, that's what it was. Slight rusting on the cap triggers a sensor. Go figure....

check engine light means a sensor has detected something is not right..could have also just tripped the sensor..a lot of places like autozone and checkers will run a test for free.you can also trying to unplug your battery for a coouple min. and see if it shuts off...otherwise you need to take it in and have it shut off with a diagnostic tool....

You probably have a problem with emission, it is your oxygen sensors that u need to replace.

LOL I would start with checking your engine.... Is your engine over heating?? Take it to a shop and have them check your engine.
