There are still basic diagnostic procedures that can be done by hand. 1) Make sure battery is fully charged and clean terminals. The last time when "clicking" was encountered, the battery was going dead. 2) Next time it happens, have a spare spark plug with you and a hand-held remote starter or someone to turn the key while you look under the hood. Disconnect a spark plug wire and attach to the spare plug. Lay it on an engine metal surface and crank over the engine (check for spark). No spark is usually a bad ECM. The other test is to listen for the fuel pump to cycle when the key is turned to the "on" position. (Fuel pump is in the tank). Running a modern fuel injected car out of gas even one time means the death of the fuel pump. Some cars, like my daughter's Acura Legend have a chronic problem with a master relay causing fuel pump symptoms, but replacing the pump did no good in her case. I found out about this by using Google and entering her car type and the problem. All cars require spark and fuel. Intermittent troubles are nearly always one of the two.
