In ireland before the time of christianity, selkies, half seal half maiden, romed the ocean. If one was to fall in love with a man they could choose to give them their pearl cap and walk the land. Their was a downside to this bargain, the selkie would forget all the wonders of the sea but always long despretly for them. But if a man fell in love with a selkie and recieved her kiss he would have fierce desire to jump in the ocean no matter where he was, it would constantly intensify untill the day he jumped in never to return.
