In the Federal System the trial courts are District Court. The loser in District Court can appeal to the Circuit Court of Appeals. After the Circuit Court of Appeals, the next appeal is to the United States Supreme Court.

Each State has a similar set-up, but may change the names. For example, in NY, the trial Court is called the Supreme Court, the appeals go to the Supreme Court, Appellate Division and the highest Court is called the Court of Appeals.

Depends on the jurisdiction. In the Federal system, the District courts are the basic trial courts; the circuit courts are the intermediate appellate courts & the Supreme Court is the final appellate court. The S. Ct. also has the authority to prescribe rules of procedure for the lower courts.

Every state has its own court system and nomenclature. In Florida,The Circuit courts are the trial courts & the District courts are the appellate courts. In New York, the Supreme Court is a trial court.
