Dude, normally I'd say self medication is bad....but it's a cold sore, a little bump on your lip!!! I just use carmex. It's less than a buck a tube, and I didn't really see Abreva help that much. Just slather carmex on it for a few days. It will get soft, then scab over and then fall off...gross yes, but it works (and makes it stop hurting).

"Cold Sores" as they're generally known, are caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus which is like the "poor relation" of Herpes Zoster (shingles). Both r espond to a very good anti-viral prescription med. Acyclovir which is contained in a preparation called Zovirax (and I am sure similar preparations). But it is a prescription only item, and unless you have prescription insurance coverage, very pricey. But if all else fails, this will get the job done.

If you get a lot of cold sores and nothing is working, a visit to the doctor for a prescription might be the way to go, and, while expensive, a little goes a long way. If you do, tell the doc to make the prescription for the largest tube, as there is often little or no difference in price on this kind of item. But you could check that with your local pharmacy before you see the doctor. By the way, some people who are very prone to cold sores, if they are not treated they c an turn very nasty.

Abreva. A little pricey, but the tube will last forever because you use a very small amount. This stuff really works. Other than that, if you suffer from them regularly, try taking 1000mg of lysine when you first feel one come on.
