The best way is to have a second partition C: and D: drive as your hard drive As C: drive has your XP you can install Vista on D: drive

doing this will install a boot loader so you can multiboot between the two.

Second choice is that you can install Virtual software where you can install Vista within a Window. You do need a reasonable fast computer to do this to use it properly. What it does is create a large file and this file acts as a hard drive and using this software wont effect your XP that you are using plus it wont modify your hard drive in any way

There is Virtual PC , Vmware and Parallels will do this

You can use Grub as a bootloader to make it a multi boot.
