Adobe InDesign vs Adobe PageMaker?

Question

Hi there. I used Adobe PageMaker daily from 1998 (version 5).

I am applying for a job which has in the Job Description "You will be expected to have an in-depth knowledge of Adobe InDesign."

Everything else in the JD I can do standing on my head. I may be expected to do a test to show my proficiency in InDesign. Can I wing it? Or should I admit that I'm proficient in PageMaker only, and risk not getting the interview?

Aside from the fact they're DTP packages, InDesign (esp CS2) is a very different beast, much more to learn but you'll be familiar with the Adobe toolbars and stuff; even so it's leagues ahead of Pagemaker - which I don't think they develop anymore. InDesign was supopsed to be the Quark XPress killer (failed) but is a top bit of software.

You evidently have lots of experience in Pagemaker, so you probably know the printing process/preflight stuff inside out. I don't think it would take you long to readjust to InDesign, but I wouldn't try winging it.

InDesign is Adobe's version of QuarkXpress, so if you know how to use Quark just get the trial version of InDesign and play in it. Pagemaker is different, but you should be able to catch on to InDesign pretty quick.

InDesign is the mutts and very very user friendly.  I used to use Freehand (I hate Quark) and moved to InDesign with ease.  I'd be honest and state your experience.  I'm not familiar with Pagemaker - I'm guessing it's PC.  Are they expecting you to work on a Mac or PC?  If you're having to change hardware then it could be a problem...

Photoshop CS6 isn't in creative cloud it's is the last version in Creative Suite and the last version that you can own. Because of Adobe stupid decision not giving you any choice about Creative Cloud, I don't recommend any Adobe products, including Elements.

Download the free trial of Indesign and learn as much as you can before the test and then state when they give you the test that you have used it but are more familiar with Page Maker

you should at the very least know the major differences in the packages...but to be honest once you know one of the Adobe packages the rest are a walk in the park to pick up..
