Lost Windows Server 2003 security rights... Any ideas?

We've lost alot of security rights on our files servers running Windows Server 2003 SP1. When looking at the security tab (under Properties), the list is empty...

We're suspecting a virus, HW malfunction or hacking... (I know, this is very broad).

Any ideas on what caused this and how to avoid it in the future?

Hacking is obvious, but also make sure someone is not surfing on the server. This is opening the chances of viruses. Constantly updating definition device on the AntiVirus program.
