RAM question???

I have 256 mb memory and I wish to install another memory module or card, whatever they are called.

I plan on purchasing 2 cards that are supposedly programmed to work together and give me 512 mb.

My question is where is the ram memory ?? Will I lose any

information from memory when I pull the installed card ??

RAM stands for Redily Accessable Memory, which means that nothing is stored on it. RAM is used for the computer to have space to run things in. which makes sense when you think about it that with 256mb RAM you can only open so many programs, and with 512mb you can open twice as many programs. even if you dont have that many programs open, with the more RAM you have, the faster your computer will run, and that includes internet as well.

as to where its located, that depends on the type of computer it is. but it is always located on the motherboard. the RAM is a long stick and is usually locked in place. you will need to set it loose by pulling the tabs at each end and then pulling the RAM out.

i reccomend saving the old RAM just in case things dont work out for you with the new RAM. a little word of advice.

    good luck

No, you wont lose any info at all. The SDram that you'll be putting inside the computer will from about 5 inches to 7 inches long approx. It's easy to spot it's slots once you get inside the computer. Their slots are on the motherboard. It's possible (if you have more than 2 memory slots) that you can use more than just the 2 new chips which will be 256 meg each for a total of 512 megs. Every manufacture is different so get in touch with yours and ask if necessary. Larry Radio Shack

    Last question first, NO.

Look, there is one 256 already installed. If you get one 512 Mb stick and install it, you would have 768Mb of RAM. That is huge.

Except, if you are doing live streaming video processing, and then two sticks of 512 Mb would be 1 Gigabyte and might not even be enough...

This is called RAM as it is Random Access Memory, and is where the Operating System loads and runs programs.

The hard drive is where data is stored and retrieved by the OS, as it is needed. Data can also be stored on USB devices, CDs or DVDs, and on floppies, or tapes. removing or inserting them do not affect them, as long as the power is removed, or the program ejects them.

Never mess with any hardware when the computer is turned on, and always wear an ESD strap to touch memory or other internal components.

Download the manual for your computer or motherboard from the manufacturers website. This will show you where the memory is located. It's fairly easy to do. Just follow the directions "2 the T". Memory modules look like a normal circuit board with chips on them but is shaped like a ruler, but only 4 inches long or so, and they usually mount standing up (length-wise) on the motherboard. Your computer will support 2 or 4 modules at a time.

If you have 256M today on 2 memory modules, then each one is 128M. If you only have 1 module today, you only need to install a single 256M module to get 512M. Look at what is there now. If you have more than 2 slots, go ahead and attach them all.

MAKE SURE THAT THE GAP IN THE CONNECTORS IS PROPERLY ALIGNED WHEN YOU INSTALL THEM. (It will only go one way)

Once installed, the computer will start using it on its own. You will not lose anything.

first if you have 256 and want 512 then just buy 1 256 stick

second once you open the case and have the new stick in hand its easy to find where they go

3 removing a ram stick dosnt mean you loose anything but your pc will act weird and make noise without it but i have faith you can handle putting a ram stick in just make sure both tabs click into placehttp://bartman1.blogspot.com/

i don't think that you will loose any data on your computer, but, to save money why don't you buy another card that is 256MB, but if you want, some times some stores do a promotion and does it for 2 for the price of 1, you need to look around. mainly

pcworld.co.uk - since im not sure wot country u live in i cant tell u what sites you can go on... :D

there should be at least 4 ram slots on your motherboard altogether, so there should be plenty of room for an upgrade if you only have 256. ram are long and thin cards, it isnt hard to find. and yes make sure your upgrade ram is compatable
